Police Scotland discipline just nine officers after 412 accused of racism over last six years

No Police Scotland officers have been sacked after 412 were subjects of racism allegations over the last six years.

Figures released through a Freedom of Information request show that between 2015 and 2020, 284 allegations were recorded by the national police force.

Of the 284 allegations, 412 officers were 'subject to these allegations'. However, none have been dismissed and only nine have been disciplined in that time.

The data shows the number of incidents has also risen in the last three years from 31 in 2018 to 57 last year.

While the number of officers involved has been rising for the last four years from 48 in 2017 to 76 recorded in 2020.

Scottish Greens justice spokesperson Maggie Chapman questioned police (Daily Record)

Despite the rise in incidents there have been nine cases where either formal action (one) or management action (eight) was taken between 2015 and 2020 (excluding 2019 as information was not supplied).

The FOI states: "No subject officer attached to the identified closed allegations above has been dismissed.

"A total of 3,424 Conduct or Misconduct cases were received between 2015 and 2020."

Politicians have said the lack of action by the force is "very concerning" and that more must be done to face up to "institutional and structural racism" in Scotland.

Maggie Chapman, Scottish Greens justice spokesperson, said: "It is very concerning that complaints of racism by police officers in Scotland almost never lead to any action. It is extremely unlikely that all of these allegations were false.

"While I welcome recent commitments from Police Scotland on equality and diversity, it is clear that more must be done.

"If Scotland is going to face up to institutional and structural racism we cannot have complaints against police officers going unheard and without action, especially when the Black Lives Matter movement has shone a light on tensions across the UK between policing and communities."

Lib Dem MP and former police officer Wendy Chamberlain said: "Officers are expected to upload high standards so I am disappointed to see almost 300 allegations of discriminatory behaviour.

"The public rightly have high expectations of police behaviour.

"The police should consider whether more can be done to build confidence in the complaints system."

Deputy Chief Constable Fiona Taylor said: "The vast majority of our officers and staff demonstrate our values of integrity, fairness and respect and a commitment to upholding human rights as they serve our communities day in, day out.

"Where inappropriate behaviour is brought to our attention, this is considered by our Professional Standards Department and any allegation of racism is fully investigated.

"Racism, or any discrimination, is abhorrent. It has no place in society and no place in policing.

"As a service committed to policing by the consent of our fellow citizens, it is a moral imperative and an operational necessity to seek to better reflect, represent and serve our constantly changing society.

"While progress has been made, we are bringing additional focus and independent assurance to this vital work."
