Police Scotland and Loch Ken Trust in talks to tackle antisocial dirty camping

Police Scotland has opened talks with the Loch Ken Trust in a bid to tackle antisocial dirty camping around the loch.

The move comes after trust volunteers and New Galloway Angling Association members were verbally abused and threatened with violence.

Intoxicated campers from central Scotland and northern England were often the culprits.

Dee and Glenkens councillor Dougie Campbell and South of Scotland MSP Emma Harper have written to Police Scotland raising their concerns.

A direct radio link between local officers and the trust to speed up response times were among possible solutions proposed.

Sergeant Greg Hawker at Castle Douglas said: “Increased patrols have seen interactions with visitors from all over the country, educating people and deterring potential anti-social behaviour. “Joint police patrols with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have been instigated in an effort to educate visitors in the potential dangers when lighting camp fires in the area.”

Local area commander Chief Inspector Bryan Lee acknowledged there were growing problems associated with irresponsible lochside camping.

He told the News: “We can confirm that we have received correspondence regarding the Loch Ken Trust and will respond addressing the points raised in the letter.

“We have been in contact with Loch Ken Trust regarding this issue and will continue to work with them to help crackdown on anti-social behaviour.

“Everyone wants to enjoy being outdoors but the inconsiderate behaviour of some can spoil it for many.

“We will respond to any incidents reported to us and take the appropriate action.”
