Police say they will fine anyone breaching lockdown after 'multiple gatherings' reported in park

Police say they are stepping up patrols after numerous people were seen having 'social gatherings' in a park in Salford.

Officers in Swinton say they have received multiple reports of gatherings in Victoria Park today, "putting others in the community at risk".

They say they will be issuing fines to anyone who is caught breaching government guidance.

Sharing news of the increased patrols on social media, officers in Swinton wrote: "This is a blatant breach of the Government guidance and putting others within our community at risk.

"As such, patrols within the park will be stepped up this afternoon / evening and officers will issue Fixed Penalty Notices to anyone found in breach of the social gathering guidance".

GMP spokesperson, said: “We are always working to engage with members of the public to educate and encourage, rather than use our enforcement powers.

“Encouragingly, we are continuing to seeing the vast majority of people following Government guidance, however we do have officers and PCSOs patrolling key community areas and we have engaged and challenged those out without good reason, including those irresponsibly hosting and attending house parties or gathering in numbers in public places.”

Since March 23, the UK has been required to stay at home to help slow the spread of coronavirus, except for a limited number of reasons, including to buy food or for medical reasons, or to exercise once a day, either alone or with members of their household.
