Police say 'no risk to public' after man arrested and placed under armed guard at hospital after weapon recovered

Police have confirmed there is 'no risk to the public' after a man was arrested and a weapon was recovered. Following his arrest the man was taken to Fairfield Hospital for treatment and was guarded by 'specialist' armed officers.

Greater Manchester Police have shared the information following concerning reports about a 'man with a firearm' at Bury's Fairfield General Hospital. However, there was - and remains - no known threat to the public, the force has said.

There neither was nor is an 'incident' at the hospital. 'Specialist' officers, who were armed, have been overseeing the arrested man while he is at hospital, the Manchester Evening News understands.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Specialist officers are at Fairfield Hospital with a man while he receives treatment for non-serious injuries after he was arrested earlier today (11 October) in Rochdale.

"There is no risk to the wider public and we are working with hospital staff to minimise disruption this evening."

A weapon was recovered following the man’s arrest and enquiries are ongoing, added Greater Manchester Police. There was – and is – not any danger to those in the hospital, the M.E.N. understands.

The Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, which operates Fairfield, has been contacted for comment.
