Police's message to Notts County fans ahead of play-off final at Wembley

Police inspectors have advised Notts County supporters against travelling down to Wembley for the National League play-off final at the weekend - saying pubs near the stadium won't be showing the game live on television.

The Magpies take on Harrogate behind closed doors in the capital on Sunday (August 2), as Neal Ardley's side look to secure promotion back into the Football League at the first attempt.

Inspector Rob Taylor, of the Nottinghamshire Police football policing unit, said there were no concerns ahead of the fixture and explained there was no point in fans making the journey to London.

He said: "For a game like this, we speak to the Metropolitan Police, the UK Football Policing Unit and North Yorkshire, because it's Harrogate.

"But we are not sending any police officers down there - we are not expecting any fans to travel. We have no concerns with Harrogate.

"I can say that the Metropolitan Police have got the FA Cup Final on Saturday (August 1), between Arsenal and Chelsea, and are only having a handful of cops in the Wembley area for that, that's for two teams from London.

"We absolutely do not expect anybody to travel down there (for the Notts game)."

He added: "Wembley itself has security staff all around the ground, inside and outside.

"So fans can't get anywhere near into the ground or to have their photos taken outside the ground.

"The ground is not accessible - there really is no point in going down to Wembley.

"There are some pubs in and around the ground but our understanding is that the football matches are not shown on cup final days.

"Our advice would be: don't waste a trip to go and sit in a pub in Brent without the football on the TV, when you can sit at home or watch it in a pub in Nottinghamshire."

The Magpies beat Barnet 2-0 last Saturday ( July 25) at Meadow Lane to secure their place in the final.

Inspector Taylor said there were no issues on the day.

"We are very pleased with how it went and I am sure the club are. So no issues whatsoever, nothing to report.

"It went perfectly. They all (fans) behaved well, as expected."

The game on Sunday, broadcast live on BT Sport, kicks-off at 3pm.
