Police rush to train station after reports of 'incident' on tracks

All lines leaving East Garforth trains station have been temporarily blocked following reports of an incident on the tracks this evening (October 24).

Some services to Leeds have been cancelled and others to Hull and Manchester are now facing delays, after what turned out to be a false alarm.

According to West Yorkshire Police, there were reports of somebody in a 'situation' on the line near East Garforth Station.

But British Transport Police responded to the incident but could not find anyone.

When officers tried to contact the original caller, there was no answer and emergency services were stood down.

Members of the public reported a large police presence in the area following the reported incident between Leeds and Micklefield.

Despite the false alarm, the incident has had an effect on services travelling to, from and through Garforth.

According to a statement from Transpennine Express: "The emergency services are dealing with an incident at Garforth so all lines are blocked.

"Train services running through this station may be cancelled, delayed or diverted."

Passengers travelling to Manchester have been advised to head to Doncaster, where they will be able to board an alternative service.

Ticket acceptance is in place with London North Eastern Railway and Cross Country UK "via any reasonable route" until further notice.

Northern expect the disruption to last until roughly 8.30pm.

A spokesperson said: "Due to emergency services dealing with an incident between Leeds and Micklefield, no services can run between Leeds and York/Selby until further notice.

"As a result all services between York and Blackpool North wil start and terminate at Leeds, failing to call at Church Fenton, Micklefield, East Garforth and Garforth."

Some trains have been replaced by buses or coaches, and will call at all stations.
