Police rush to illegal rave in north Leeds and arrest two men at rowdy memorial party

Dozens of police officers rushed to the scene of an illegal party in Leeds last night after a family memorial got out of hand.

West Yorkshire Police received reports of an outdoor party next to Meanwood Community Centre on Stainbeck Avenue, Meanwood, shortly before 11pm on Tuesday, July 21.

Several vehicles, including a number of big police vans, were sent to the scene with their sirens blaring and officers found between 50 and 60 people at the event.

Kat Jordan, who lives on Stonegate Place opposite the community centre, said people started gathering in the afternoon, but the music became louder as the night wore on.

She said: "They set up a big inflatable gazebo and started up the generators.

"It all started at about three or four o'clock and it just went on and on. It got louder and louder and louder throughout the night."

Police arrested two men at the scene for public order offences while dealing with the incident and Kat says there were tensions between officers and the party goers.

"It looked as though they wanted to fight with police," she said. "It was absolutely mental.

"People were launching themselves over fences to get away from police. I've never seen anything like it.

"I can't even describe how bad it was at the end of the party. It was like warriors going in to fight, it was that loud."

Kat Jordan, who lives in the area with her partner and their two children aged 6 and 14, told LeedsLive that she and her family are desperate to move away from the area due to the ongoing issues they have faced not just this year, but in recent summers too.

"Two weeks ago they had another party nearby that went on all night," said Kat. "It was absolutely crazy.

"It went on until two or three in the morning. They were shouting and beeping their horns for hours though the night.

"All my neighbours had people going into their gardens and peeing all over the place. There were piles of rotting meat left dumped outside our homes.

"My partner has a neurological condition which can result in seizures if he doesn't get enough sleep. He really suffers with it all. He can't get any better with all this going on.

"We've lived here for about six years now, but we are trying to move. We are on a transfer list and we might even go to Scotland because it's just so bad here.

"This happens every summer. We can't cope with it. We can't live like this anymore.

"When the police turn up, the people start swearing at the neighbours for phoning the police. There's no community spirit around here any more.

"I keep expecting my windows to go through when I put something on Facebook to say what they are doing isn't right, but I just can't stay quiet any longer."
