Double demerit penalties will come into force on Hunter roads at the stroke of 12.01am on Friday, as part of a statewide police crack-down for the long-weekend.
Tomorrow, Highway Patrol commander Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy will officially launch Operation Slow Down, which will run until 11.59pm on Monday.
More police will be on the roads targeting drivers for dangerous behaviour such as speeding, drink and drug-driving, mobile phone use and not wearing seatbelts.

Meanwhile, the Rural Fire Service said people travelling away from their homes for the weekend should ensure they have a plan in the event of a fire in unfamiliar surroundings.
"Fires can pose incredible danger for those not prepared or unaware of their surroundings, like those camping, on holidays or travelling in unfamiliar areas," Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said.
"Along with having a bush fire survival plan and discussing it with your family, it is important to stay up to date with the latest information."
