Police rules on what you can and can't go supermarket shopping for this bank holiday weekend

The bank holiday weekend has arrived and many people will be heading out to the shops to stock up on food or DIY supplies over the next few days.

But with the country still on lockdown due to the coronavirus, people should still only be going out as little as possible, when they need to pick up essential items.

With Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressing the country on Sunday to announce how lockdown measures will be eased going forward, people are getting excited at the prospect of going out more.

But the recent warm weather has seen some people jumping the gun and there are fears that people are giving up on the lockdown message too early.

Yesterday, Merseyside Police tweeted about having to break up a BBQ party on Crosby beach, saying “please don't be tempted to do something so foolish putting yourselves and others at risk”.

So if you’re thinking about heading out to the shops this bank holiday weekend, there’s a set of rules you need to follow, to help keep yourself and others safe, reports the MEN.

This is the full list, issued by the National Police Chief's Council, of what you can and can't go shopping for over the Bank Holiday weekend.

What you can and can’t go shopping for during lockdown

  • To buy food for several days, including luxury items and alcohol
  • To buy a small amount of a staple item or necessity (for example a newspaper, pet food, a loaf of bread or pint of milk)
  • To collect surplus basic food items from a friend
  • To buy tools and supplies to repair a fence panel damaged in bad weather
  • You are allowed to buy non-essential items during a shopping trip for your weekly necessities.
  • The list states that's it's not likely to be considered reasonable to go and buy DIY supplies for a project that isn’t essential, for example repainting your kitchen.
