Police reviewing footage which shows violent clash between officers and football fans

Police are reviewing footage of a violent altercation between officers and football fans following a game between Wigan Athletic and Preston.

A video, which has been shared on social media, shows a number of police officers clashing with fans outside the DW Stadium in Wigan.

It came after visitors Preston North End won 2-1 in the championship league derby on Saturday afternoon.

The footage shows several police officers surrounding a couple of fans as they are laid on the floor.

Two police officers later appear to be struggling with another man.

An eye witness claims the clash was between Preston North End fans and police.

He told the Manchester Evening News that a number of officers got out of a police van and began shouting at fans.

Police say they are reviewing all the footage in line with 'normal procedure.'

The video prompted a large reaction on social media, with many fans saying the clash started over 'nothing.'

Some fans stated that police did not leave enough time for Wigan supporters to leave the stadium.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "We are aware of a video in circulation following the Wigan Athletic vs. Preston North End game at the DW stadium this afternoon.

"All available footage is being reviewed in line with normal procedure."
