Police reveal worst coronavirus lockdown breaches and confirm number of fines

People have been fined for travelling hundreds of miles to pick up a kebabs and attending illegal parties over the past month.

Avon and Somerset Police have issued 294 Covid-19 fines across the area since England's third lockdown started on January 6. This is almost a third of all fines issued since the pandemic began in March.

The total number of fixed penalty notices the force has issued now stands at 1,077, police confirmed, as the force also reveals some of the worst offenders.

Among the Covid-19 breaches was a Bristol group who travelled 40 miles for a takeaway.

Officers found the group, who were from different households, eating a kebab at Cheddar Gorge, on January 9.

During another kebab incident, a driver who had travelled a 350-mile round-trip from their home in Exeter to pick up the takeaway in Coventry, was fined when he crashed near Portishead.

And 38 people were fined for attempting to attend an illegal rave in Oldbury Court.

Meanwhile, organisers of a student party - two 19-year-old men - were given fixed penalty notices after dozens of people attended a gathering on Frogmore Street.

This illegal party took place days before a new £800 Covid fine was introduced, which will be handed to anyone attending an event with more than 15 people.

Chief Insp Justin French previously said: "Most people are doing the right thing and staying at home. It's the actions of a few people who are ignoring or bending the rules which is putting everyone at risk.

“We have dedicated patrols in place to respond to breaches of Covid-19 legislation and officers and staff will continue to work round-the-clock to play their part in helping to stop the further spread of this virus."
