Police reveal why there was a massive bang near Nottinghamshire this morning

Police have revealed why a massive bang could be heard near Nottinghamshire this morning.

Residents in areas such as Ilkeston, Heanor and West Hallam contacted Nottinghamshire Live with reports of "a huge boom."

The bang left houses shaking and caused car alarms to go off, according to Derbyshire Live.

Just before 10.30am, Derbyshire Police released a short statement confirming where the bang came from.

The statement reads: "The recent loud bang heard over Derbyshire was as a result of a RAF jet passing over the county causing a sonic boom."

Two RAF Typhoons escorted Air India B777 Flight 191 to London Stansted after what was believed to have been a bomb threat but it is not known if the two incidents are linked at this stage.

A sonic boom is the sound associated with the shock waves created whenever an object travelling through the air travels faster than the speed of sound.

Sonic booms generate enormous amounts of sound energy, sounding similar to an explosion or a thunderclap to the human ear.

The RAF are set to release a statement with more information about this morning's sonic boom shortly.
