Police reveal why Birkenhead Park was cordoned off

Police have revealed why a large area around Birkenhead Park was cordoned off this morning.

Yellow tape was visible by the town gates off Conway Street today following an incident in the early hours.

Police vans were also parked by the scene as investigations continued.

This afternoon Merseyside Police said the incident is currently believed to involve the theft of a handbag at a nearby nightclub.

It is understood investigations are still ongoing into the nature of the incident.

A spokeswoman said: "We are investigating following reports of a theft this morning, Sunday, 20 September.

"At 5.45am, it was reported a woman in her 20’s had entered Birkenhead park after a man who had allegedly stolen her handbag from a club earlier in the evening took the bag into the park.

"Enquires are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances and anyone with information is asked to contact @MerPolCC, 101 quoting ref. 20000569772 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111."
