Police reveal what brought Kilmarnock bypass to a standstill

Police have revealed what brought a busy Kilmarnock road to a standstill last week.

The A71 was gridlocked while officers dealt with an incident on the busy Kilmarnock bypass on Friday night.

Commuters were hit with severe delays between the Moorfield roundabout and the Bellfield interchange just before 4pm.

An eye-witness also spotted debris, which looked like huge rocks, scattered all over the road.

One eyewitness said: "The traffic was moving so slowly. It was completely stopped at points.

"It didn't look like a crash or anything like that.

"When I left the bypass I could see huge rocks and bits of mud all over the road. God knows where it came from."

Police confirmed this week that there was indeed boulders on the road, believed to have fallen from a lorry.

Officers were called to the scene at 3.42pm and a road policing vehicle was on the scene two minutes later and eventually cleared of debris by the patrol.
