Police reveal parents were dropping kids off before large scale disorder in Newmains

Police in Wishaw are asking parents “do you know what your child is doing” after reports of kids being found forming part of large disorderly groups.

Officers were called to a large scale disorder in Bonkle Road, Newmains, over the weekend in which a 14-year-old boy was assaulted.

A 16-year-old boy was later arrested by plain clothes officers.

However, police were left horrified to learn that the teenagers were being allowed to gather.

Inspector Alan Mulholland told Lanarkshire Live : “We are being told by members of the public, and the young people, that some are being dropped off by their parents to gather in various locations throughout the area.

“We will be issuing warning letters to parents and guardians where a young person is found in circumstances where it could be inferred they are forming part of any disorderly groups.

"It’s only right that they are made aware of the issues it causes.

“We don’t want to discourage young people from meeting up with their friends, however, when they form part of a larger group it can have a huge impact on local communities who have been in contact with elected members and the police to complain.

“We will be working with campus officers within schools discussing the dangers of alcohol and anti-social behaviour and are in dialogue with NLC to work with youth workers in the area.”
