Police reveal new tactic burglars are using to target homes in Salford

Police have issued break-in prevention advice following a spate of burglaries in Salford.

Burglars have been using a tactic called lock snapping to target homes in Swinton and Little Hulton, according to officers.

The incidents first started in December 2019 and are still taking place now.

Lock snapping sees the burglar snap the barrel of the lock.

Anti-snap locks can be purchased for £30 and are “worth considering” if you have locks that are vulnerable, officers have said.

A spokesman for GMP Swinton and Little Hulton said: “We are doing all we can to target the offenders, however a large part of tackling burglary is around crime prevention and target hardening too.

“This is the reason we hand out leaflets, conduct visits with those affected and share crime prevention advice.

“The research shows that it is our proactive policing, plus target hardening and increased security, which effectively reduces the problem.”
