Police reveal lockdown rule breakers who won't stay indoors

More than 80 fines have been dished out to those refusing to obey the lockdown rules - with the majority being 'young men' who can't keep away from friends.

Assistant chief constable Steve Cooper said his officers had handed out 81 fines from Easter weekend to Friday, May 1.

He said the majority of new fines had been to young men caught between 1am and 4am driving around the city after visiting friends.

He has delivered a fresh appeal to the public, especially men aged 18 to 30, to stop breaching the lockdown rules, stay at home and save lives.

Chief constable of Nottinghamshire Police, Craig Guildford, said handing out fines was a last resort but those who continued to breach the guidelines would be punished.

Rule-breakers will be handed a £60 fine, which is reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days.

Nottinghamshire Police started handing out fines during the hot Easter Bank Holiday, where three people were caught driving a caravan they purchased back from Essex.

A number of men were also stopped on their way to visit girlfriends, with one man stopped twice in one day when he was driving his friends from different households around the city.

While the number of rule-breakers has dropped, ACC Cooper said there were still concerns around "unnecessary journeys" committed by a minority of people.

He said: "It is mainly unnecessary journeys within the early hours of the morning where people are coming back from somewhere they should not have been.

"We are not getting the grand tour of the country incidents anymore. We are stopping cars between 1am and 4am after visiting friend's houses.

"They will say 'popped to see a mate.' We know this is hard for everyone but this is about keeping people safe and keeping the NHS in business.

"It is still predominantly young men, between 18 and 30. It is relatively low numbers.

"The vast majority are complying. If you comply with this now we can get through this quicker as a county."
