Emergency crews called to disturbance at Don Dale youth detention centre

Fire engulfed one of the buildings at the Don Dale facility.

Northern Territory Police were called to respond to a major disturbance at Darwin's Don Dale youth detention centre on Tuesday night where a fire later broke out.

The facility was surrounded by emergency crews, including ambulance officers and firefighters who were called out to the incident just before 7:00pm.

A Northern Territory Hazardous Chemicals vehicle also attended the scene.

A number of detainees were seen on the roof earlier in the evening, with what appeared to be smoke visible at the entry of the centre.

By 10:00pm two buildings appeared to be ablaze.

Just after midnight, multiple detainees were seen being escorted from the facility in police vehicles.

A spokesperson for Territory Families confirmed authorities were on the scene hoping to resolve the situation, but gave no more information.

At one stage six fire trucks were at the site where flames were seen engulfing at least one building and smoke billowed from the facility.

At the scene, shouting could be heard over the constant ringing of alarms.

An announcement being broadcast across the facility warned detainees: "This is the police. Drop your weapons. Your actions are being monitored. There will be consequences. Stop putting yourself and others at risk. Surrender yourself to the police."

The incident came after a two-and-a-half-hour stand-off on Sunday when two teenage detainees scaled the roof of the facility.
