Gunman identified in deadly New Hampshire psychiatric hospital shooting

AP

The gunman who allegedly shot and killed a security guard at a New Hampshire psychiatric hospital before being fatally shot himself by police has been identified.

State Attorney General John Formella named the suspect as 33-year-old John Madore on Friday morning, hours after the shooting at New Hampshire State Hospital, a psychiatric facility, in Concord.

Mr Formella said Madore fatally shot security guard Bradley Haas, 33, in the lobby of the hospital with a 9mm handgun.

Madore was then shot dead by a state trooper responding to the scene at around 3.38pm.

At around 4.45pm, the New Hampshire Department of Homeland Security and Management said the situation had been contained. The scene remained active while officials continued investigating a suspicious vehicle, which was being worked by a bomb squad.

Aerial images of the hospital showed a large number of police responding to the incident.

The facility is the state’s “premier” psychiatric facility serving over 100 patients, the state’s Department of Health and Human Services website says. Concord, the state capital, is 120 miles southwest of Lewiston, Maine, where 18 people were killed and 13 others were injured in shootings last month.

In a statement posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, New Hampshire Republican Governor Chris Sununu said the facility had been cleared.

“The state immediately mobilized, and first responders and law enforcement are on the scene. We will provide as many details as possible as this situation unfolds,” he said.

The shooting is still under investigation and no potential motive has been announced.
