Police respond to pub reopening on Harbourside during lockdown

Police have responded to a pub reopening on the Harbourside during lockdown.

People gathered outside two Bristol pubs on Friday afternoon to enjoy the good weather despite the coronavirus lockdown.

People could be seen outside the Oldbury Court Inn, in Gill Avenue, which says it is only doing a food takeaway service and not serving any alcohol, and The Broken Dock Kitchen & Bar, in the Harbourside, which has now reopened as a takeaway service.

Crowds gathered in the Harbourside area on Friday afternoon and several people took to social media to discuss the pub's reopening, with one saying people were queuing for drinks.

The bar said it approached the plan "responsibly", with markers on the queue and signs asking people to maintain their two metre distance.

Police have now issued a statement about the pub's reopening.

In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said: “On Friday, PCSOs attended Bristol Harbourside after concerns were raised about a pub selling takeaway alcohol.

“The PCSOs gave advice to the licensee about the social distancing measures in place and encouraged members of the public to move on from the area."

It continued: “Since the new legislation came into effect we have always looked to engage with people who are potentially breaching the Government’s restrictions, explaining the importance of staying at home and encouraging them to do the right thing. Enforcement has always been a last resort.

“In this instance, the PCSOs continued to patrol the area throughout the day to ensure people weren’t gathering until the pub stopped serving takeaway drinks shortly before 8pm.”

With temperatures set to soar this Bank Holiday weekend, police have urged the public to comply with the current lockdown restrictions.
