Police respond to Glasgow Rocks' revelations that players suffered racist abuse

Police have responded to Glasgow Rocks' recent revelations that three of their players were subjected to racist abuse after moving to the city back in September, forcing them to move to a different part of the city.

The professional basketball team - who play their homes matches at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in the east end - said that they were "deeply saddened" by a number of racist incidents that were directed at players David Mpondo, Julius Van Sauers and Marc Kwedi after they moved into a property together in the north of the city at the start of the season.

They issued a statement last night on their website detailing the extent of the abuse the trio suffered, which included the trio being threatened and made unwelcome, being referred to as 'monkeys', having their car attacked and becoming the subject of false claims made to the police that their home was visited by prostitutes.

Glasgow Rocks said that the incidents were reported to police at the time and that the players have since been moved to another property, where they have encountered no further disturbances.

Police say they are aware of the incidents and that investigation is underway.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We have been made aware of offensive communication and enquiries into the matter are ongoing."
