Police rescue woman, dog after car driven onto beach

The elderly woman and her dog were rescued by police at 2:10am.

An elderly woman who drove her car onto the sand at Henley Beach in Adelaide's west has been detained under the mental health act, police say.

Police were called to the Esplanade, Henley Beach about 9:30pm on Wednesday after reports of a car being spotted driving along the sand.

The Kia Sportage got bogged near the River Torrens outlet at Henley Beach South.

When the high tide was approaching about 2:10am, police managed to remove the woman and her dog from the vehicle, but had to leave the car overnight.

The 72-year-old woman from the western suburbs is in hospital.

The car has since been removed.
