Police rescue 22 dogs from one property over fears of tail docking

Officers carrying out a warrant to search a property in Kirkby came across an unexpected find - more than 20 dogs.

Police seized a total of 22 dogs from the property in Northwood, after the execution of a warrant in relation to a separate matter.

Local officers from Knowsley assisted staff from the RSPCA in removing the animals due to concerns over the dogs' welfare.

This included allegations that a number of puppies have been subject to illegal tail docking.

A police spokesperson said: "The welfare needs of all dogs are currently being addressed by the RSPCA who will be providing the relevant medical intervention that may be required at this time.

"A male and female from the property are currently under investigation which is ongoing at this stage."

Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, tail docking, where a part of a dog's tail is removed, was banned in England and Wales. There is an exemption for Spaniels, Terriers, and certain hunting breeds that are used for work.
