Police remove 'a number of items' from Wythenshawe house at centre of historic rape probe - but won't say what they are

Police have revealed 'a number of items' have been recovered from a house in Wythenshawe that was sealed off as part of an investigation into a report of an historic rape.

Officers and forensic experts have been at the property on Benchill Road since last Sunday night.

The five day search operation - which has seen the garden dug up - has now finished.

Police haven't revealed what the items are 'for operational reasons', but a senior officer has confirmed no human remains were recovered.

Detectives handed out leaflets in the surrounding area making clear the investigation does not relate to anybody currently living at the address.

Police said they were supporting the family currently occupying the home.

Enquiries at the house began following a report of an historic rape, GMP said.

A spokesman said in a statement: "A cordon was established while officers conducted their enquiries, which included the excavation of the property's garden.

"The cordon has now been lifted and investigations concluded.

"The investigation did not relate to any persons currently living at the address.

"The current occupants were supported while police carried out their enquiries and will be supported throughout their return to the property."

Photographs from the scene showed officers removing slabs of concrete from the back garden in wheelbarrows.

A skip was also used.

Superintendent David Pester added: "We'd like to thank residents, particularly those living at the address, for their patience while we conducted our enquiries.

"I'm pleased to say those investigations have now concluded.

"A number of items have been recovered from the search. These will be taken away and assessed by forensic teams.

"I am aware of speculation surrounding this investigation.

"I want to make it absolutely clear that no human remains have been recovered during the forensic examination of the property.

"People in the area may notice a continuing police presence over the next couple of days while officers assist partner agencies with the current occupants’ move back into the property.

"We're grateful for the support of all our partners within the community during this investigation."
