Police comb scene after bike chase gunman opens fire

Police were today combing the area where a gunman opened fire close to shops in Kirkby.

Detectives were seen making door to door enquiries at a street in the Tower Hill area at around 11.40am on Saturday.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Sapphire Drive, close to The Windmill pub, last night following reports from witnesses that shots had been fired in the area.

Witnesses reported that a number of shots had been fired at around 8.40pm on Friday following a dramatic bike chase through the Kirkby estate.

Merseyside Police were informed a man on a bike was being chased by two others, also on bikes, before a gunman fired shots and the bikes departed from the scene.

All the men were reported as wearing dark clothing and were seen by a number of people who were outside the pub at the time.

Police have reported that no one was injured in the incident but they are keen to identify the men involved in the incident.

Detective Inspector Jackie Guinness said police were in the early stages of the investigation.

She said: "To fire a gun in a residential area is clearly an extremely reckless and dangerous act which could have led to tragedy in the heart of the Tower Hill community."
