Police release update on corruption probe at Wetherby Young Offender Institute

A woman who was arrested as part of an investigation into alleged corruption at Wetherby Young Offender Institute has been released from custody.

The woman, who is in her 20s, was questioned by detectives after she was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office.

She was arrested by officers from Leeds District Prison Crime Team at a property in Wakefield on Saturday, January 25.

A police spokeswoman said the woman has been released under investigation and "enquiries remain ongoing".

The young offenders' institute, which can house over 320 boys and men between the age of 15 and 18, was praised by the chief inspector of prisons last year, following an unannounced inspection.

According to the inspector's report, the facility is well run, "delivering useful outcomes for children" and staff are using "robust initiatives" to reduce violence.

Before that inspection, the facility had been plagued by violence for several years and in 2017, two officers attacked a 17-year-old inmate and subjected him to "a punishment beating".
