Police release statement after 'sex attack' at city centre park

Police cordoned off a section of a large park in Wakefield as they carried out investigations into a 'possible sexual assault'.

Officers went to Thornes Park in Wakefield on Saturday evening after receiving a report at 10.35pm.

An area in the vicinity of the mini railway was sealed off and officers guarded the scene to prevent people gaining access to the area.

Today a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "At 10.35pm last night (31/10) police received a report of a possible sex assault at Thornes Park in Wakefield.

"A scene was established while officers carried out their enquiries."

Residents noticed the cordon in place early on Sunday morning and it was reportedly still in place that same evening.

A Force spokesman said inquiries were continuing.

Wakefield councillor Michael Graham reported the police presence in the vicinity of the miniature railway on his Facebook page.

Locals said the cordon appeared to be around a portable building and the mini railway.

Thornes Park is a large public park which is situated close to Wakefield city centre.
