Police release statement after Barcelona team hotel targeted with fireworks

People who set off dozens of fireworks in an apparent bid to wake up Barcelona players at the team's Liverpool hotel were 'Wake up call for Mr Messi': fireworks set off outside Barcelona team hotel , say police.

The players are staying in the Hilton Hotel in Liverpool One and some fans appear to have taken matters in to their own hands to give Liverpool an advantage in tonight's game.

Videos circulated on social media showing dozens of fireworks being set off next to the hotel, where Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and the rest of the Barca squad arrived yesterday.

In one video a man can be heard shouting "wake up call for Mr Messi" before lighting the first of many fireworks .

Merseyside Police have confirmed they received reports of the fireworks just before 4am today.

Although the fireworks themselves are not prohibited setting them off between 11pm and 7am is, except for special occassions.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police siad:"We can confirm a report was received of fireworks being set off at Chavasse Park in Liverpool city centre shortly after 4am today (Tuesday 7 May 2019). 

"It is against the law to carry or use adult fireworks if you are under 18, and illegal for people of any age to let off or throw a firework in a public place. 


"Also, you must not set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except on Bonfire Night, New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year. 

"If anyone believes they have information about the incident or the illegal use or possession of fireworks, please contact Merseyside Police social media desk via Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook Merseyside Police CC. You can also call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

The firework prank followed on from a Twitter storm after a rumour was started saying  the distinctive  Barcelona team bus had been stolen and was being driven erratically  around   Fazakerley  .
