Police release new statement on missing Alex Johnson as family undertake river search

Police officers have confirmed they are searching for missing man Alex Johnson as his family searches the Tyne.

Family and friends of the 24-year-old have undertaken searches of the River Tyne around Newcastle as they believe Alex fell into the water from the Tyne Bridge on Tuesday.

Heartbroken loved ones gathered at the Swing Bridge on Saturday morning before spreading out to search the river, with efforts focusing on Byker through to Newburn.

Northumbria Police confirmed the force received a report of a concern for welfare for a man on the Tyne Bridge at 2.15am on Tuesday.

Now Durham Constabulary say the last confirmed sighting of Alex, from Chester-le-Street , was last Saturday.

They have appealed to the public to look out for him.

A force spokesperson said: "Officers from Durham Constabulary and Northumbria Police are currently conducting a search for missing person Alex Johnson.

"Alex, 24 years old from the Chester-le-Street area, was last seen by CCTV operators on the Tyne Bridge on April 16.

"He is believed to have been wearing grey jogging trousers and blue trainers.

"Search efforts are currently being focused on the Tyne River, and Alex’s family are grateful for any help or information that can be offered.

"Anybody with any information relating to Alex’s whereabouts is asked to contact Durham Police on 101, quoting incident number 17 of April 16."

Family and friends have been desperately searching the River Tyne, and took to social media to urge others to help.

Dying mum offered an ambulance ride to her son's wedding after marriage was brought forward  

His sister Ashleigh Marr, 29, has been at the river everyday looking for her brother.

She said: "I think this has just given us a bit of hope at the minute. Everyone feels so hopeless.

"For me personally, this is all I can concentrate on right now, getting him out of the water.

"That is what I need to focus my energy on, by being here, doing something."
