Police release new image in investigation into death of Leeds United fan found on beach

Police investigating death of a Leeds man who was found dead on Cleethorpes beach have released a photo of him.

Humerside Police are appealing for information after a jogger found Gary Simpson's body about 100 metres from shore on the morning of Friday, May 17.

The 49-year-old, who grew up in Meanwood, was reported missing after watching Leeds United's defeat against Derby County in the semi-final play-offs second leg two days earlier.

The roofer had been working in the Grimsby area and watched the game with family members and work colleagues.

A force spokesperson for Humberside Police, who are treating his death as unexplained, said: "We can now release photographs of 49-year-old Gary Simpson who was sadly found dead on Cleethorpes beach on Friday 17 May 2019.

"Mr Simpson, from Leeds, was last seen at his rented accommodation on Strathmore Court in New Waltham around midnight on Wednesday 15 May.

"We are now appealing for anyone who might have seen Gary between these times.

"Our specialist officers are supporting Mr Simpson’s family at this time."

Mr Simpson was wearing a dark blue Adidas T-shirt, dark blue jeans and black Adidas Samba trainers with three white stripes on each side.

He may have also been wearing a khaki green Nike tracksuit jacket with dark patches on the shoulders.

Detective Sergeant Mick Keech said earlier this week that a post-mortem examination and forensic tests proved inconclusive as to the cause of Mr Simpson’s death.

His sister Anne Simpson told LeedsLive he was 'well loved' and his family are 'cut up' following his passing.

Anyone with any information should contact police on 101 quoting log number 111 of May 17, 2019.
