Police have released images of a man that may help solve the alleged sexual assault of a woman by a stranger as she slept in her Fitzroy North home earlier this month.

The woman was sleeping when she woke up at around 4:40am on January 8 to discover an unknown man allegedly sexually assaulting her.

The woman screamed and the man fled, and the woman's partner attempted to chase him but he was unable to be located.

A police investigation has uncovered CCTV that shows a man in the area at the time wearing clothing similar to that described by the alleged victim.

Sexual Crimes Squad detectives wish to speak to the man or to anyone who recognises him or saw him around St Georges Road, Clauscen Street, Barkly Street, Holden Street or Miller Street in Fitzroy North on the night of the alleged sexual assault.

It's also believed personal items including a wallet and electronic equipment were stolen from the alleged victim's home.

Anyone with information is urged to contact CrimeStoppers by visiting their website or calling 1800 333 000.
