Police release image of man after Metrolink ticket inspector punched in the face in 'unprovoked' attack

Police have released a photograph of a man they wish to speak to in connection with an unprovoked assault at a Metrolink stop.

A member of staff asked a man to show his ticket and was punched in the face, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

The assault happened at Langworthy tram stop, in Salford, at around 11.50pm on November 25.

The victim suffered a split lip and a broken tooth palate, which has caused his bottom teeth to become loose.

No arrests have been made but GMP have released an image of a man they wish to speak to.

They believe he could assist with their enquiries.

Sergeant Michael Mooney, of GMP's Transport Unit, said: "This was unprovoked, needless violence towards a staff member who was just doing his job. Behaviour such as this will absolutely not be tolerated in Greater Manchester.

"We have been following all available lines of enquiry to ensure the individual responsible faces the consequences of his actions, and are now able to release a CCTV image of an individual we would like to speak to in connection with this incident.

"If you know who this person is, or have any information that could assist police do not hesitate to get in touch."

Danny Vaughan, head of Metrolink at Transport for Greater Manchester, said: “I am extremely sorry to hear about this shocking attack on two members of our staff who work so hard to keep the travelling public safe.

"Staff and passenger safety is our number one priority, and we take a zero-tolerance approach towards this kind of behaviour.

"We are working with the police to do whatever we can to help find the person responsible, and I urge anyone with information about this attack to come forward and help with the investigation."

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 2191 or 101 , quoting log number 2994 of 25/11/21.

Reports can also be made anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
