Police release footage of man who assaulted a Canberra bus driver

ACT Police are seeking witnesses to an assault on a bus driver earlier this month.

CCTV footage of the man who assaulted the driver has been released.

The assault happened on Friday, October 2 about 8.55am when the bus was stopped at the Westfield Belconnen interchange.

The man, who is described as Asian in appearance with black hair, was wearing a red jacket and blue jeans at the time of the incident. He had boarded the bus at the Dickson interchange.

Police said the man had a verbal altercation with the bus driver before he assaulted him. He also appeared to spit in the direction of the bus and the driver.

Detective acting inspector Simon Coady described the incident as shocking.

"With COVID-19 still a real concern in the community, we should all be taking additional precautions to keep safe," he said.

"The actions of this man are reprehensible, and I would call on any members of the Canberra community who can identify him to contact police or Crime Stoppers."

Anybody who has information about the incident can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers website and quote reference number 6640712.

Information can be provided anonymously.
