Police release CCTV of upskirting suspect in Wilko as they launch first manhunt

Police have launched the UK’s first upskirting manhunt since the sex crime became an offence in April.

The CCTV images released show a man the police want to speak to — after a 21-year-old woman was targeted in a Wilko store.

Another shopper told the woman that a pervert had taken a photograph up her skirt.

The woman alerted police about the incident in Banbury, Oxon.

PC Anthony Cossar of Thames Valley Police said: “If you are the man, or know who he is then please contact the force as soon as possible.

“We are also want to speak to the female witness who informed the victim that the offence had taken place.”

Taking aphotograph of someone up their skirt became a specific sexual offence on April 12 under the 2019 Voyeurism Act.

The new law followed a campaign by Gina Martin, 27, who was targeted at a Killers gig in Hyde Park in 2017.

After informing the police, she was shocked to discover upskirting was not a specific offence and the case had been closed.

An online petition calling for police to reopen the case sparked Lib Dem MP Wera Hobhouse to put forward a private members’ bill calling the act to become an offence.

It secured government backing last July and the new legislation was approved in the House of Lords.

Offenders face up to two years in jail.
