Police recruit forced to sit down during PM Boris Johnson's speech in West Yorkshire

Boris Johnson apologised to a police recruit who appeared to tire and sit down while standing in a backdrop with other officers as he made a speech in West Yorkshire today.

Video shows the PM looking round at the female recruit saying 'don't worry I'm gonna to end very soon' then 'are you alright?' moments before the officer gives up and takes a seat.

Mr Johnson was addressing crowds at West Yorkshire Police’s Carr Gate training centre after announcing government plans to recruit an extra 20,000 police officers in the next three years.

However the PM was 45 minutes late delivering his speech and the officer appeared to tire then finally sit down - despite Mr Johnson's assurances.

His decision to use police recruits as background for his speech has been criticised on Twitter.

Kevin Maguire wrote (SIC): "What a waste of police time to force all these coppers to be a uniformed backdrop for Boris Johnson’s party political broadcast for the Conservative Party. I know previous PMs, other politicians, do it and it riled me then so please let it stop."
