Police recover man's body from River Wear near Sunderland bridge

The body of a 61-year-old man has been recovered from the River Wear.

The man was recovered from the water after his body was found near Sunderland 's Queen Alexandra Bridge on Sunday.

Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team posted on Facebook that they had been called to assist with a "river related incident".

Northumbria Police has confirmed that a man's body was found in the water.

A force spokesperson said: "Shortly before 12.30pm yesterday we received a report of a body in the River Wear near the Queen Alexandra Bridge.

"Officers attended the scene and the body of a 61-year-old male was recovered from the water.

"Enquiries to trace the man's next of kin are ongoing.

"There is not believed to be any third party involvement and a report is being prepared for the coroner."
