Police recover body from the River Wear at South Hylton

An investigation is under way after an unidentified body was found in the River Wear.

Northumbria Police were called to Lion Place, in South Hylton, close to the river, at 11.18 on on Saturday morning, where a person was found dead.

The body was recovered, and now officers are attempting to establish the identity of the person found.

Police combed the area around the river, near to the former Golden Lion pub, which lies close to where the river is crossed by the Hylton viaduct.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "I can confirm that there was an incident down at the River Wear, and that a body has been recovered.

"We are still making enquiries to identify the identity of the person."
