Police have recovered almost 200,000 stolen Cadbury’s Creme Eggs – while joking they have “helped save Easter”.

The huge haul of chocolate – which also included other varieties and is thought to be worth around £40,000 – was stolen from a unit in Stafford Park in Telford, Shropshire, on Saturday.

But police later arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of theft, after stopping him on the M42 northbound.

Posting on Twitter on Tuesday, West Mercia Police wrote: “West Mercia Police has helped save Easter for Crème Egg fans after almost 200,000 of the chocolate treats were stolen from a unit in Stafford Park in Telford.”

They went on to describe the incident as an “eggs-travagent theft”, adding: “Shortly after... a vehicle, presumably purporting to be the Easter bunny, was stopped northbound on the M42 and a 32-year-old man was arrested”.

“Glad you cracked the case”, one Twitter user joked.
