Police raids on Govanhill shops recover 35,000 illegal cigarettes and tobacco

A police raid on shops in Govanhill has uncovered 35,000 illegal cigarettes.

Police Scotland's community team, acting in conjunction with Trading Standards, recovered the haul on Thursday from various shop premises in the area.

Officers also discovered 8.1kg of tobacco with the goods representing over £10,000 in unpaid excise duty.

The team was joined by tobacco detection dogs Daisy and Dixie with their handler Bobby.

The shops had tried to conceal the illicit goods and were not selling them in the standard plain packaging the law requires, a Trading Standards spokesman said.

The recovery was the second of its kind in the Govanhill area this year. In February, local officers seized around 5,000 illegal cigarettes after receiving intelligence from the local community.

Police Scotland said: "If you have any information on persons selling illegal cigarettes then Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111 or online."

As we reported earlier this week, a man was arrested after being caught bringing 600,000 illicit cigarettes into Scotland.

The van driver was stopped by police while driving southbound on the M74 near Lanarkshire on Friday, August 14.

Officers found a haul of counterfeit cigarettes in the back of the van, with an estimated duty loss of £185,000.
