Tokyo police on Thursday night raided a host club, where male staff provide companionship to female customers, in the Kabukicho district of Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, on suspicion of attempted fraud.

Officers from the Shinjuku Police Station of the Metropolitan Police Department wore protective clothing for the raid because the club has had a case of novel coronavirus infection in the past.

According to the police, a host, 32, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of intentionally deceiving a female customer of the club last month into ordering expensive champagne and other things by telling her he would pay for it later, then charging her 9.6 million yen.

Since the spread of coronavirus infections, the Metropolitan Police Department is making officers wear protective clothing and goggles for searches and escorts of suspects in situations that could lead to virus infections.
