Police raid German FA headquarters as part of corruption probe

  • Investigators raided the German Football Association's (DFB) offices on Wednesday as part of a nationwide probe into suspected ticket and hospitality violations related to Euro 2024.
  • The investigation, prompted by inquiries into a German national, a French national, and others, focuses on the alleged illegal allocation of hotel invitations and several thousand tickets to preferred guests for the tournament hosted in Germany.
  • Prosecutors in Bochum and the criminal office of North Rhine-Westphalia confirmed searches were taking place across Germany, though they did not explicitly name the DFB offices in their joint statement.
  • A municipal employee from Gelsenkirchen, a Euro 2024 host city, is suspected of receiving unauthorised benefits, including tickets, travel, and hotel stays, valued at $2,736.
  • Herbert Reul, the Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, emphasised the importance of public trust in major events like the European Championship, stating that authorities would not allow it to be damaged by such actions.
