Police race to Glasgow tenement after huge cracks appear amid fears building could collapse

Police have been called to a tenement in the West End of Glasgow which had been evacuated last month after cracks appeared in the building.

A couple living locally said that, on their way to Byres Road for some shopping earlier today, they had noticed that cracks on the outside of the tenement at the corner of Oakfield Avenue and Glasgow Street had widened.

They said: “When we returned less than an hour later, we were shocked to see that large blocks of sandstone had fallen from the building and were lying on the ground.

"We immediately called the police.”

Police who arrived on the scene spoke to locals and then contacted Glasgow City Council’s Building Control department. Oakfield Avenue had already been closed to traffic since last month due to the dangerous state of the building and now police have also closed the road to pedestrians, explaining that the whole building might collapse and endanger lives. .
