Police race to Edinburgh Oxgangs area after reports of 'explosions'

Police and fire services raced to Edinburgh's Oxgangs area last night amid reports of 'explosions' in the area.

At 11pm last night locals took to social media to share news of loud bangs 'which sound like explosions' in Oxgangs Drive as both police cars and fire engines appeared on the scene.

One resident told Edinburgh Live : "I think it was a van on fire, the police were there and the fire brigade too. I live on Oxgangs Gardens so it was behind my house. The van exploded several times so I don't know if it had certain chemicals in it. It was quite scary though. It's usually so quiet down here."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed that the cause of the disturbance had been a vehicle fire which had been deliberately started.

They said: "Around 11.10 pm on Friday, 18 September, 2020, police were called to a report that a car was on fire in Oxgangs Drive, Edinburgh.

"No one injured but significant damage to car.  Police treating the incident as wilful  - deliberately set alight - and enquiries are continuing."
