Police question mum over alleged assault of a baby in Shieldfield estate

Police have questioned the mother of a young child over the baby was 'slapped in the face' while she was drunk.

ChronicleLive understands the child was taken into temporary care following the alleged assault.

A witness claimed the baby, wearing just a nappy, was placed in a pram outside at night in December while the mum drank wine with two men in the middle of a Shieldfield estate.

Following the December 4 incident, Northumbria Police confirmed the child was "safe and well"

Police are understood to have visited the estate the following morning before starting extensive enquiries.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson has now confirmed a woman, who is understood to be the baby's mum, has now been quizzed as the investigation continues.

"We can confirm that a woman in her 30s has been interviewed under caution," they said.

“Enquiries are ongoing and the young child concerned is safe and well.”
