Police pursuit reaches 130km/h in 60km/h zone

Police are appealing for help in relation to a high-speed pursuit at Greta that was caught on camera on Saturday night.

Newcastle-Hunter traffic and highway patrol officers saw a white Ford Laser fail to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of the New England Highway and Nelson Street about 10.30pm.

Police activated their warning lights but the vehicle failed to stop, triggering a pursuit.

Footage of the chase captured by a bystander shows the Ford speeding through suburban streets in Wyndham Ridge Estate with the highway patrol car in tow blaring its siren. Police said the car reached speeds of up to 130km/h in a 60km/h zone.

The pursuit was terminated a short time later due to the dangerous manner of driving.

A second pursuit was later initiated on the New England Highway, with officers successfully deploying road spikes.

The Ford came to a stop about 500m later and the driver fled the scene, while a female passenger remained in the vehicle.

The female was taken to Maitland Hospital for assessment, while the driver remains at large.

As police continue their inquiries, officers are appealing for anyone with mobile phone or dashcam footage of the incident to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
