Police provide more details after discovery of artillery shell in River Trent

Police issued a statement as Wilford Toll Bridge was re-opened after a suspected unexploded bomb was found in the River Trent.

A 50 metre cordon was put in place by Nottinghamshire Police at Wilford Toll Bridge on Wednesday afternoon (June 2) after the historic device was discovered.

The bridge was closed to trams and pedestrians while the item was examined by bomb disposal officers.

Nottinghamshire Police re-opened the bridge after 7pm yesterday and have explained what was found in the river.

A spokesman for the force said: "The historic artillery shell, which had been in the water for many decades, was pulled from the river in Nottingham by an angler at around 4.20pm.

"Police were called to the Wilford Toll Bridge shortly afterwards and established a 50-metre cordon around the scene.

"The bridge was closed to trams and pedestrians and but has now been reopened.

"The shell has been taken away for safe disposal by expert officers."

Inspector John Lees, of Nottinghamshire Police, added: “Clearly in situations like this we have to put the safety of the public first and act out of an abundance of caution.

"This object has now been taken from the scene and I would like to thank the public for their understanding in this matter.”
