Police protest 'precaution' measure at Glebe Park

Police gathered in number at Glebe Park on Saturday as a preventative measure against a protest which was planned, but then called off.

ACT Policing confirmed the presence of the officers, stationed at each of the park entrances and within the park itself, was a "precautionary" measure.

Earlier this week anti-lockdown protesters had advised police they were planning to gather at Glebe Park but on Friday advised the protest had been called off.

What was not known is whether the decision to call off the protest had managed to reach all those planning to attend.

Canberra has been largely unaffected by the anti-lockdown protests which have occurred elsewhere, and which turned violent in Melbourne this week.

Far-right groups had hijacked the Melbourne protests and donned high-vis gear to blend in with unionists who had been protesting against a snap two-week ban on construction, following a spike in COVID transmission cases on work sites.

ACT Police and Defence Force personnel were also conducting Federal Highway border duties on Saturday morning.
