Police probing "terrifying ordeal" in which man's car was stolen at pallet blockade in road

A man's car has been stolen and set alight in a "terrifying ordeal" after pallets were used to block a Newtownabbey road early this morning.

It is understood the victim tried to drive away during the incident on Rathcoole Drive just after 1.10am, but was stopped by a gang of around 10 men.

Some of them were reportedly armed with pieces of wood.

Police said he was ordered from the white Peugot 106, which was then driven a short distance away and set alight after the windscreen was smashed.

The driver was able to leave the scene, uninjured.

Detective Chief Inspector Dunny McCubbin said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for this man.

"We are continuing with our enquiries today and we would appeal to anyone who may have been in the area and saw what occurred, or who has information which could help our investigation to call us on 101 and quote reference number  116 of 11/07/20.

"A report can also be made using the online reporting form via  www.psni.police.uk/makeareport. Alternatively, information can be provided to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at  www.crimestoppers-uk.org."

Among the males reported to have been involved is a man thought to be aged between 35 and 40-years-old, who was bald and wearing a white T-shirt and brown shorts.

Another male is described as being aged approximately 30-years-old, with black hair and wearing a light blue hooded top.
