Police probing link between Blantyre shooting and victim's torched car

Cops say they are keeping an 'open mind' as to the motive behind shooting victim Graham Williamson's murder.

Speaking at the scene of the targeted attack in Caithness Street, Blantyre this morning, Detective Superintendent Kevin Jamieson said they are investigating and potentially linking the 26-year-old's torched car to his murder.

A major investigation was launched yesterday after Graham, known as Kermit, was gunned down outside his home at 5pm on Monday whilst his burnt out car was being towed away.

The car had been torched on August 13.

Detective Superintendent Kevin Jamieson said: “I’m keeping an open mind in terms of the motive as to why Graham was killed.

"One of the lines of enquiry we are looking at is the targeted fireraising of his car which was reported to police on August 13, but it is too early at this stage to identify a clear motive."

Police also said they believe the young dad's killer fled the scene in a dark blue car and are appealing for anyone who may have saw the vehicle in the area to come forward.

Detective Superintendent Jamieson added: "What we do know is there was a dark blue motor vehicle in the street which the person involved in the incident had been in.

"After the shooting the car then drove off at speed down Caithness Street and into the surrounding streets.

"Officers are currently checking CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses.

“However, we are still keen to hear from anyone who may have any information that will assist their enquiry.

"It is crucial for anyone with information to tell it's tale to bring this incident to a swift conclusion for Graham's family's sake and for local residents. "

Graham had been standing outside his house whilst his car was uplifted by a tow truck after it was deliberately torched on August 13.

But after turning away to walk into the back garden of his home, Graham was approached from behind by a hooded thug who blasted him in the back with a gun.

The dad was rushed to  University Hospital Wishaw  but was tragically pronounced dead a short time later.

Detective Superintendent Jamieson refused to comment when asked if Graham was known to police, but said he didn't deserve this to happen.

He added: "Graham was hard working. He was a father, a partner and a son and his family are clearly devastated by what's happened to him.

"At this stage we don't know why Graham was targeted, but what I do know is he didn't deserve this to happen."

Shocked neighbours told yesterday how the tow truck driver and locals attempted to resuscitate Graham as he lay dying on the pavement.

One woman said her neighbour saw Graham fall to the ground and ran out to his aid.

She added: "She heard the shots and saw him fall down on the road.

"She quickly ran down and the tow truck driver was already trying to resuscitate him.

"He was just lying there with blood pouring out. I then heard the commotion and ran down too.

"We all tried our best to save him. We had towels trying to stop the bleeding.

"We were just desperate for the ambulance to arrive.

"His pulse was so weak and he was turning blue."

High visibility officers remain in the area and members of the public are encouraged to speak to them should they have any concerns or information.
