Police probing doorstep scam where child asks for money for Ayr primary school's 'missing toys'

Police are probing a doorstep scam involving a child asking for donations to an Ayr primary school for ‘missing toys’.

Residents across the town have raised concerns after a boy, believed to be a young teen has claimed they are a pupil of Newton Primary School and are taking in cash to replace lost toys.

Concerned neighbours have reported door knocks in the St Andrews Street and Monument Road areas of Ayr.

Newton Primary School in Wallacetown say they would never “encourage children to collect money in this manner,” and have “no knowledge” of doorstep fundraising at the school.

One woman told how a young boy came to her door in the St Andrews Street area.

The woman claims the boy had a folder with a ‘list’ of other donors but that she found it “very doubtful”.

The boy is then said to have asked for donations for Newton Primary school to replace missing toys.

School bosses have told how they contacted the police following the incident.

And Ayrshire Live understands that officers have been carrying out enquiries into the incident involving a lone child believed to be in their early teens.

Officers say enquiries are at an early stage after they confirmed two bogus caller incidents in Ayr.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers are investigating reports of two bogus caller incidents in Ayr.

“The incidents happened on Monday, October 4 in the St Andrews Street and Monument Road areas when a young boy, possibly a young teenager, was reported to attend a property and ask for money for a school toy collection.

“Enquiries remain ongoing.”

A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “Newton Primary School has no knowledge of any fundraising of this type at the school, and would never encourage children to collect money in this manner. The police have been informed.”
